Artemis Center to benefit from Change for
Charities at The Greene
Artemis
Center was selected as a Change for Charity recipient by The Green
Community Foundation for March and April. Only six organizations
are designated each year to receive a portion of the proceeds from
the parking meters at The Greene. All organizations are evaluated
primarily on their efforts to support youth and family interests in
the Miami Valley.
Established by the owners of The Greene,
The Greene Change for
Charity Foundation Fund
focuses on providing meaningful support to youth and
families in the greater Miami Valley area. The Foundation, funded
by parking meter proceeds and ticket revenues, offers significant
support to area nonprofit organizations through the Change for
Charity Meter Program, the Greene Scholarship Fund and Community
Event Sponsorships.
Each quarter spent in a meter and each ticket
paid helps fund the current two-month featured charity. So the more
people that park at The Greene in March and April means Artemis
Center will receive a greater donation. A little change can go a
long way!
Artemis Center Celebrates the
Life and Work of Kim Wade
|

In loving memory of Kim N. Wade
Coworker-Advocate-Friend
1957-2007
Until her
untimely death on November 15, 2007, at the age
of 50, Kim Wade dedicated the past 12 years of
her career assisting victims of domestic
violence and their children. Since 1995 Kim
served as a court advocate for Artemis Center
for Alternatives to Domestic Violence. Kim
provided service to victims daily, offering her
support, knowledge, and understanding. She
helped victims to develop a plan for their
safety based on each victim’s individual needs
and circumstances.
In the course of 12 years,
Kim served countless mothers and their children,
helping them to lead a life of peace and
safety. Children who witness domestic violence
often carry those memories for a lifetime. The
lessons they learn in their families are often
repeated as they form families of their own.
She referred children she served to the child
therapy program at Artemis Center where children
learn about healthy relationships, gender
stereotypes, and appropriate expression of
feelings.
Kim had a profound impact
on not only her clients but also her co-workers
and colleagues. Kim was one person that you
could always count on for a warm smile or a joke
or a kind word. Many of her co-workers came to
her for strength, understanding and humor.
Kim was a dedicated
advocate, inspiring co-worker and caring friend
to many at Artemis Center. She is dearly missed
by the women of Artemis and continues to remain
close to our hearts. |

Annual Artemis Walk Raises Over $17,000
September 30, 2007- Nearly 300 participants gathered to support
the Artemis Center's Taking Steps Against Domestic
Violence 5K Run/3K Awareness Walk at Wegerzyn Gardens
Five Rivers Metropark. This year was the largest
turnout in the history of the event! More than
$17,000 was raised to support critical programs for
victims of domestic violence and their children at
the Artemis Center.
Once again
this year, the 5K Run/3K Walk was made possible through
the generous support of our lead sponsor, Verizon
Wireless. We would also like to thank
additional sponsors including: University of Dayton,
Macy's, Panera Bread, Hot 102.9 and Z-93.
Kettering Medical Center Nurses Honor Artemis Center
August, 2007 – Nurses at Kettering Medical Center recently honored
Artemis Center with a 2007 Community Awareness Service Award and a
$1,000 check. The award and check were given to Artemis Center
for its dedication to improving the quality of life for the people
in communities served by Kettering Medical Center, said Dianne
Ditmer, clinical nurse manager for professional development at KMC.
Every year, Kettering Medical Center sets aside funds to honor
nurses during Nurse Appreciation Week. This year, a committee
of nurses decided to give away the money. "The committee said,
'Let's put into practice what nurses do,'" said Ditmer. The
nurses voted to give awards to Artemis Center and two other local
charities and to create four scholarships to help colleagues cover
the costs of nursing education.
"We truly appreciate the generosity of the Kettering Medical Center
nurses and their vote of confidence in Artemis Center," said Patti
Schwarztrauber, Artemis Center executive director. "When it
comes to domestic violence, nurses are on the front lines.
They are among the first to care for those who have been injured and
often the first to ensure that abused patients get connected to
Artemis Center for services."
Artemis Center Achieves OANO State Standards of
Excellence
May, 2007 – Artemis Center was recently honored by the Ohio
Association of Nonprofit Organizations (OANO) for achieving the OANO
Standards of Excellence. Artemis was one of only five organizations
in the state to receive this certification for 2007. The Standards
of Excellence promote ethical practices and accountability in
nonprofit organizations across the state. Artemis was among those
honored at a May 8 luncheon at the Ohio Statehouse Atrium.
“This recognition puts Artemis in an elite
group of nonprofits in Ohio,” said Patti Schwarztrauber, Artemis
Center executive director. “The Standards of Excellence designation
shows Artemis is following sound business practices and that we have
accountability measures in place to insure we are good stewards of
the money we receive.” Agencies receiving the OANO Standards
certification have achieved excellence in the following areas:
mission and program, governing body, conflict of interest, human
resources, financial and legal, public accountability, fundraising,
and public affairs and public policy. Artemis Center also meets the
Wise Giving Alliance Standards of the Dayton/Miami Valley Better
Business Bureau. In 2004, Artemis received a Nonprofit Eclipse
Integrity Award from the local BBB.
Ohio Supreme Court Upholds State's Domestic Violence
Law
July,
2007 - The Ohio Supreme Court has ruled that Ohio's domestic
violence law, which protects unmarried victims of partner abuse,
does not conflict with the definition of marriage in the State
Constitution. The justices said the law does not violate
Ohio's Constitutional amendment that prohibits the state from giving
legal recognition to unmarried relationships.
Prior
to the decision, a number of domestic violence cases had been on
hold as a result of the issue raised in the case of State versus
Carswell. Michael Carswell challenged the law, saying he could
not be charged with a crime that should apply only to married
couples.
"We are
extremely pleased with the Supreme Court's decision," said Patti
Schwarztrauber, Artemis Center executive director. "The tragic
impact of domestic violence is the same on victims, whether they are
married or unmarried to their abusive partners. The Court's
ruling provides equal access to justice for ALL victims."
P&G Pet Care Awards Grant to Artemis
P&G Pet
Care has awarded a $15,000 grant to benefit the Artemis Center
Children's Therapy Program, which provides early intervention and
therapy for children who have been exposed to domestic violence.
P&G Pet Care has been a long-time supporter of the program, donating
$60,000 since 2004.
Artemis Director Wins National Award
Patti
Schwarztrauber, Executive Director, has been selected for a 2006
Sunshine Peace Award! Each year the Sunshine Lady Foundation
recognizes 20 extraordinary individuals from across the nation who
make a difference; those who help to build communities that are
intolerant of domestic violence and through whose work peoples'
lives are changed for the better. Candidates are nominated and
selected on excellence in administration of programs and in victim
advocacy. Patti has chosen Artemis Center to receive a $5,000
donation in her name from the foundation.
